The Odoo implementation process, step by step
Odoo projects succeed or fail on decisions made before configuration starts. A practical guide to discovery, design, migration and go-live.

Odoo's flexibility is its greatest strength and its greatest risk. Because almost anything can be configured or customised, projects can drift into rebuilding old processes in a new system. A disciplined process prevents that.
Phase 1: Discovery
Map the end-to-end processes the ERP must support — typically order-to-cash, procure-to-pay, plan-to-produce and record-to-report. For each, capture volumes, exceptions and pain points. The output is a fit-gap analysis: what standard Odoo covers, what needs configuration, and what genuinely needs custom development.
Phase 2: Solution design
- Company and entity structure, currencies and tax.
- Chart of accounts and costing method.
- Product, customer and supplier master data model.
- Integrations: banks, e-commerce, logistics, CRM, BI.
- Data migration scope: what history moves, and what stays archived.
Phase 3: Build in iterations
Configure and demonstrate process by process rather than delivering everything at the end. Business users should see their own scenarios working early. Keep customisations in clean, documented modules so future upgrades stay manageable.
Phase 4: Data migration and testing
Clean data before migrating it. Run at least two trial migrations, reconcile balances and stock, and conduct user acceptance testing with migrated data — not demo data.
Phase 5: Go-live and hypercare
Plan the cutover in detail, train by role, and staff a hypercare period with quick decision-making. Then move to a continuous improvement roadmap: automation, reporting and integrations you deferred.
An ERP project is a business-change project that happens to involve software.
